I myself have read the writings and teachings of the heretics, polluting my soul for a while with their abominable notions, though deriving this benefit: I was able to refute them for myself and loathe them even more.

Eusebius
About This Quote

Around the year 1207, Dominican friar Marco Girolamo Valla was born. He was a humanist, an academic, a poet, and an author of one of the first translations of the New Testament into Italian. He was also a Minorite friar. One day, while walking along the streets of Bologna, Valla came across a group of heretics.

Most notable heretics at the time were Cathars, who believed in reincarnation and had dualistic beliefs about the world. The Cathars believed that humans were born evil and had to be saved through penance. The Cathars abstained from meat and wine, wore white robes instead of black ones, and did not eat any animal that had been killed with a knife.

The Cathars also believed in an all-powerful Catholic god who could hear prayers but did not answer them. They were enemies of the Roman Catholic Church.
